In 2013, our team was awarded a grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Our goal was to describe hospital levels of maternal risk-appropriate care (MRAC), and to evaluate whether these levels were associated with maternal and neonatal outcomes for low-risk women and specified high-risk groups. We surveyed all non-military hospitals providing childbirth services and assigned them to one of three MRAC levels. 96% (239/248 hospitals) of hospitals responded to our survey, but only 82 hospitals (34%) were classifiable under these criteria (35 Basic, 42 Intermediate, and 5 Regional).
